Did you know that the first free design’s podcast dates back to 2005? I didn’t either.
To be perfectly honest with you, until recently, I only knew about two or three different podcasts, and I thought that as far as design goes, that was about it. As a consequence, it came as a bit of shock when I found out how much I’ve been missing out.
So I decided to do something similar to the 40 Websites to keep your design juices going post, only this time, we’re focusing on podcasts.
Web and UX/UI podcasts
The Web Ahead
Web Ahead is the type of podcast that incites reflection.
It’s about the web’s past, present, and future.
The Hacking UI Podcast
Hosted by two designers/developers, this is a project that not only discusses UI, but also productivity, entrepreneurship, and all-around geekiness.
The UX Intern
It’s monthly and different. As you can tell by the name, the main discussion revolves around UX design. As for the cool factor, it’s about an intern that interviews experienced designers from his point of view.
UI Breakfast Podcast
In their own words, UI Breakfast is based on exciting conversations about UI/UX design, products, marketing, and so much more.
User Defenders Podcast
With a quirky name and appearance, User Defenders Podcast is all about empowering young UX designers. By exploring the work of more experienced, leading designers, it hopes to inspire new generations to push up, be better, and do better.
Shop Talk Show
This show focus on all things web. Development, design, performance, accessibility, and a bit of everything. That’s what Dave Rupert and Chris Coyier hope to bring to the table.
Rather than discussing UX in general, this is a hands-on podcast.
Each week, the hosts choose a product and analyze their user experience. That way, the listener understands how the product works and what design principles to learn from it.
Graphic Design Podcasts
The Deeply Graphic designcast
Starting the Graphic design category right, we have this podcast.
It provides advice on all graphic design topics, with the advantage that it also answers to listeners’ questions.
Let’s talk branding
Another not-to-miss show, full of value to both young, and more experienced designers.
Let’s talk branding is about branding, strategy, and design. Because all these things go hand in hand.
The Logo Geek Podcast
I’m probably going to spend a lot of time listening to some podcasts and this one is on the top of the list.
Ian Paget, the designer behind this project, hopes to reveal what it takes to design great logos by interviewing well accomplished graphic designers and entrepreneurs.
The Reflex Blue Show: A Graphic Design Podcast
It combines the love of pop culture and graphic design in a single place, by the lens of two designers working in this industry.
Podcasts with designers’ interviews
Method Podcast from Google Design
Google Design has two different podcasts: Method and Design Notes.
The Method, hosted by Aidan Simpson, is about Google’s designers.
Each episode the listener will get to hear an interview with a different designer from Google.
Design Notes Podcast from Google Design
This second podcast by Google is about creative work and what it can teach us.
The host talks to professionals from different creative fields to found out what inspires them and what we can learn from them.
This is the case mentioned at the beginning of this post.
Debbie Millman started this podcast in 2005, on a telephone line, because she wanted to interview designers that she admires, and ask them everything.
These days the podcast has more than 200 episodes, and it’s one of the most recognized.
Design Better by InVision
InVision’s description of their podcast: Uncover insights from the world’s top design leaders.
Each episode, we get to listen to a different designer’s perspective on design and all things related.
Creative Waffle Podcast
If you need a Monday boost, this is the right thing for you.
Each week, a different professional will share their advice on career, life lesson, and everything else that helps the rest of the community.
Grits and Grids
This podcast is run by a restaurant branding and marketing agency, so guests may actually eat during the show.
Instead of being a formal interview, it’s more of a conversation where people speak frankly and honestly about everyday wins and struggles.
Run by two female designers, Clever is as much about design as it is about designers.
It focuses on the human side of designers, rather than just their work.
The AID Network presents daily talks with designers from different backgrounds. From freelancing to poster design and even logos, it has a bit of everything for everyone.
NTMY The Show
Abbreviation for Nice to Meet You, NTMY is a show where Tobias van Schneider talks with professionals from different creative fields.
It’s difficult to listen and not feel inspired by so many distinctive people.
We all have obsessions, designers included.
In Obsessed, Josh Miles interviews huge names such as Aaron Draplin and Michael Bierut, to share their stories, practical advice and of course, their latest obsessions.
The Design of Business | The Business of Design
From the Yale School of Management to the rest of the world. This is where clients and designers are interviewed to share their input on how design influences large business companies and the other way around.
The Freelance Podcast
This one is totally must-listen for me, and I want to start right away.
As freelancers, we can feel isolated and alone, so it’s always great to hear other opinions on the matter.
As the name mentions, this podcast is about the business of design.
On the episodes, Jason Blumer questions guests on everything related to having a design business.
I wasn’t aware that The Futur has a podcast.
They continuously teach me a lot about design, business and being confident in the work that I do. Their podcast is a not-to-miss show.
This podcast is for everyone who’s pursuing a creative career while being a parent at the same time.
Each episode, guests share how it feels to balance work and family in the creative industry.
This is yet another podcast with a different approach.
It’s presented by two female hosts that share how they manage to balance full-time jobs and side projects at the same time.
The Honest Designers Show
The kind of supportive pep talk we need from time to time.
If you’re struggling with something, the Honest Designers have likely answered your questions in an episode.
To kick start this category, we have a podcast that is as much about product design, as it is about entrepreneurship.
Each episode the three hosts chat about different physical products, opportunities, and their indie business.
Zachary & Maria talk about diverse creative fields such as art, design, and photography on their show.
Sometimes the podcast is just them talking to each other, and others, they have guests stating their minds.
I love this show/blog.
And if you’re a curious person, not only about design but about the world, you will love it too.
Feasting on Design
Design influences everything around us. I deeply believe in this, and so does Jason Frostholm, the host of this podcast.
In it, he chats with designers, illustrators, and photographers. Additionally, there are also chefs, bartenders and many more professionals on the show, that talk about design and how it boosts their lives/businesses.
The Daily Creative
Its purpose is to help with an idea, tip, or strategy to inspire professionals to be better at their jobs, every day.
Michael Bierut and Jessica Helfand, two major design professionals, sit down to discuss Design and current events.
Presentable focus on how design can shape the future, for better or worse. Listeners can learn about tools, trends, and methods that are being used by the biggest companies in the world.
