Deck cards for designers? Game on!

I have a photographic memory, which means that I can learn and internalize better if I use visual stimulation. Pictures, graphs or tables usually help a lot.

So, being more of a visual kind of a person, sometimes I can’t specifically remember a subject or an idea that I’ve seen before, but I always remember something visual associated with it, like a color or the general composition.

One of these days, I was looking for something that I saw online, probably on Pinterest, and came across a nice idea that really resonated with me and my lack of ability to learn things by simply reading them: deck cards for designers.

By now you will be rolling your eyes and thinking you don’t need another deck to play poker just because it’s fancier. You’re right, I don’t need it either.

The ones that I’m talking about aren’t “normal decks with a design twist”, but deck cards that intend to teach you something. So you will be playing and learning at the same time, without even realizing it.

So what are these deck cards anyway?

The first one I’ve seen was still being funded in Kickstarter (at that time) and its calledThe Design Deck.

Like you’ve probably guessed, it intends to teach or remind you of graphic design fundamentals in a different kind of way.

After this one and more recently, the creator of the design deck introduced The Font Deck, which in his own words “It’s essentially a typography textbook crammed into a deck of cards”.

Besides this one, I also came across another deck called the Guide to Typography, that it’s different from the previous one since it’s more about the anatomy of type.

If you are more inclined to web design or design thinking, you can also buy decks like the UX Flowchart Cards or the Design Thinking Process. However, these two are plain decks that only intend to be tools to help maximize your work.

I don’t know about you, but I will be keeping these decks on my Christmas wishlist (hint, hint) because I believe these are fun and a great different way to learn things.

Let me know if you have bought a deck like the ones mentioned here or if you know other cool ones.

PS: If you are feeling very sassy, you can also buy and play the F**k. The Game card deck. It may look like a simple swearing card game but it’s actually teaching you to be smarter.

Ah! Great post, and I confess you made me chuckle a bit with the last deck of cards.
Never thought of learning through using something so simple as playing cards… That only means that we really do take some designs for granted!

    Great post!
Hope to read another entry soon 🙂
